Did you ever try to polish a brick

. imageDon’t bother. Polishing bricks is a waste of time. Polishing gems is worthwhile.

Maybe you’ll get a slight luster from the brick, but you’ll never really get it shiny. There’s a good reason that -- bricks can’t be polished…

Bricks are made from the kind of material that can never be made shiny.

Sales Managers Are Polishing Bricks Everyday

Having profiled more than 35,000 salespeople over the past 16 years, I’ve come to believe that everyday too many sales managers across the country are trying to polish bricks.

How?

Because sales managers are trying to teach salespeople, who should never have been hired for sales, to sell. Countless hours are invested in these poor bricks, who will fail 9 out of 10 times.

If you want to polish a stone find a gem.

Sales Hiring is where the process of building a great sales team starts. Yet, unfortunately, too many sales managers spend  too little time hiring – or, rather, they spend their hiring energy incorrectly.

It's not only in recruitment that we do this it's a general theme in life.

When you think about it rather than spending money improving the things that people are 'bad' at we should be concentrating on the things they are good at so stars become superstars.

We as a company, are increasingly moving away from recruiting "shiny shod, sharp creased" salespeople and instead are putting technically competent 'hands on operational' type personnel in front of our customers when they want a solution to a cleaning problem. As they tend to speak the same language (and the majority of enquiries are web ones - i.e. when they have a problem NOW) the conversion rates are unbelievable

That's where the System really comes into it's own - spotting a sales person who didn't realise he was one!

It's a great way of looking at how using the System helps you spot the ones you should be talking with. Otherwise, we're condemned to looking at the "shiny shod, sharp creased" salespeople, since they're the ones who make it past the resume screen.
