100 Ways to Motivate Others
One of my favorite management consulting tape programs is Steve Chandler's "100 Ways to Motivate Others."
Here's a short excerpt of Steve's genius:
Most people managers try to motivate others by doing what doesn't work, because most people try to motivate others by downloading their anxiety on them.
They get anxious about their peoples' poor performanceand then they download that anxiety. Now everybody's tense.
Downloading your anxiety on someone only motivates that person to get away from you as quickly as possible.
Instead great leaders use these maxims to manage others:
1. To get more done, slow down.
2. To get your point across, stop talking.
3. To hit your numbers, start taking them less seriously and make a game of them.
4. To really lead people go ahead of them.
I think there's some real wisdom here.
